Description: |
The 2017 Workplans of the Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean and of the Patent Law Division foresee a capacity-building activity relating to patent drafting for Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. Reference is made to the attached letter from the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office. Accordingly, it is proposed that in cooperation with the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office, WIPO organize a Sub-Regional Patent Drafting Course in order to improve capacities and skills for drafting patent applications in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados through targeted participants who would become strategic partners for future national activities. Since patent drafting skills can be acquired only through practical drafting exercises, the entire Course will consist of two parts: (i) a face-to-face session in Kingston, Jamaica, from June 12 to 16, 2017; and (ii) a follow-up session, via e-mail communication, from June 19 to August 11, 2017. During the follow-up session, participants will be given patent drafting exercises (homework) to be submitted to the experts via e-mail. In return, they will receive their drafts duly corrected by the experts. Further, the experts will be available for questions from the participants concerning patent drafting, via-e-mail, during the follow-up period. In order to conduct the follow-up session, individual service contracts will be concluded, with the same two international experts who will participate in the face-to-face session. This Sub-Regional Patent Drafting Course will be held back-to-back with the Sub-Regional Workshop on Access to Technology for Innovation and Establishing a Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) Network for the Caribbean, to be held in Kingston, Jamaica from June 7 to 9, 2017. The following arrangements are proposed: 1. Title: WIPO Sub-Regional Patent Drafting Course 2. Purpose of event: To improve the capacities and skills for drafting patent application |
