Background We refer to the correspondence of Mr. Chapusa D. Phiri, Registrar General of Malawi, Ministry of Justice, Lilongwe and the Director General of WIPO dated March 24, 2016, and April 27, 2016, respectively (copies attached), related to a Workshop for Universities and Research and Development Institutions to sensitize officials of those institutions on the importance of institutional Intellectual Property (IP) Policies and Strategies. It is important to note that these activities fall within the context of the National Intellectual Property Policy Strategy of Malawi, validated and adopted at a Multi-Stakeholders Workshop which took place in Lilongwe, Malawi, in August 2015. Pursuant to above exchange of letters between WIPO and the Registrar General’s Office, and subsequent follow up with the Registrar General regarding the detailed aspects of the proposed symposium, the following arrangements are proposed for your consideration: The objective of the fact-finding mission is to assess on the required IP courses to be introduced in the curriculum of selected universities and colleges. The objectives of the Symposium are to: (i) raise awareness on the importance of IP education and use of IP systems at different academic levels; and (ii) discuss and explore the various approaches and tools to strengthen the capacity of academic institutions in the use of IP. |
