Description: |
The African Union (AU) has, by a letter dated August 31, 2015, invited the World Intellectual Property Organization to participate in the 1st Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Education, Science and Technology. The STC has been created in the framework of the people-centered African Union Agenda 2063, which hinges on education, science and technology as enablers and tools for achieving the envisaged continental development goals. The STC will consider strategies and policies in education, science and technology and make recommendations on how African countries will organize themselves to contribute to and benefit from the AU Agenda 2063. The meeting also envisages exploring new mechanisms for partnership for greater complementarity between education and STI sectors within the continent, with special emphasis on the Agenda 2063 journey. The expected outcome will be the endorsement by participating Ministers, of key continental strategies, roadmaps and implementation plans. The objectives and expected outcomes of the meeting align with the framework of cooperation the Regional Bureau for Africa is fostering with the African Union vis a vis the implementation of the latter’s Agenda 2063, and could also feed into the orientation of the outcome of the Dakar conference, for which the African Union is a partnering organizer. In this regard, I propose that Mrs. Loretta Asiedu represent the Organization at this meeting with a view to further exploring partnering options with AU in the framework of regional development cooperation activities of the Regional Bureau for Africa. A draft letter in response to the invitation and a cost estimate for her participation is attached for your consideration. |
