Title: Mission for a Feasibility Study of a Branding Project for “Taita Basket” in Kenya
Description: JICA has been supporting the OVOP program in several countries in Africa including in Kenya and Rwanda. The target product of the branding project in Rwanda is also expected to be selected from those supported by the OVOP program.
It is therefore in the same vein that the Regional Bureau for Africa consulted with JICA which suggested to the Regional Bureau for Africa to seek a possibility of launching a branding project for “Taita Baskets” in Kenya in view of its potential, which is another product which is supported by the OVOP program.
“Taita Basket” is a kind of sisal basket made by women in Taita Taveta County, in the coast region of Kenya. The basket is laboriously crafted by hand twisted thin sisal fiber in traditional weaving style. It has a finer mesh with unique designs of weaving which are distinct from other Kenyan sisal baskets.
JPO has agreed to include the possible branding project for “Taita Basket” in the FIT Japan Work Plan 2015-2016 (see attached work plan). Mr. Shingo Tsuda, Program Officer, Regional Bureau of Africa has conducted an online research on the basket with support by JICA and drafted a preliminary feasibility report.
