Title: Study Visit on IP Management in the Innovation Value Chain for a selected number of African Officials
Description: This activity is on the approved work plan of the Funds-in-Turst/Republic of Korea Industrial Property (FIT/ROK(IP)) 2014-2015 under Activity III.2.
Under FIT/RoK(IP), it is proposed to organize a study visit for professionals from Research Institutions directly involved in technology transfer, intellectual property (IP) management or institutional policy development and officials from the Ministries overseeing science, technology and innovation from the three African countries mentioned below.
The selection of the countries is based on ongoing efforts to develop a local innovation ecosystem, supported by public policy and strategies in each of the three countries.
Participating countries: Botswana, Rwanda and the United Republic of Tanzania.
Objective
The objective is to showcase the Korean experience in transforming knowledge into commercially viable products, the role public policy plays in the process, the role technology transfer offices (TTOs) play as connectors of research and industries, and also how the entire innovation value chain is organized, from the lab to the marketplace.
Outcome
Each participant will be required to submit an outline of an innovation development strategy, at the end of the study visit within which lessons learned from the study visit should be integrated.
Follow-up
Upon returning to their respective countries, they will be required to submit a project proposal on how to create an institutional IP strategy for IP identification, protection and commercialization, including developing linkages between research and development (R&D) institutions and locally-based businesses/industries. The best proposal may be considered for funding in 2016.
