Reference is made to the letter dated May 21, 2019, (Ref. No. GEN/WIPO/1) received from H.E. Mr. Robert Dufter Salama, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Malawi to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva and Coordinator of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) Group in the United Nations Office in Geneva, requesting for the organization of a retreat for Ambassadors of LDCs. Please also find attached the subsequent positive reply by you in relation to this request.
The title proposed for the retreat is “Technology for Development – Least Developed Countries Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”.
The objective of the proposed retreat will be to advance the discussion on the role of technology and innovation for the contribution of national socio economic development objectives in LDCs. In this context, the retreat will provide a forum for discussion on the opportunities emanating from technological development and on the concrete means to address technological capacity related challenges faced by LDCs through the utilization of tools offered by the intellectual property system.
The retreat will also address practical initiatives undertaken by the Director General to address national technological capacity building and related challenges and the solutions forwarded to address these challenges.
In this context, the retreat will provide an opportunity to take stock of achievements, assess current issues and trends, and provide roadmaps on the use of technologies and related issues for development in LDCs.
The retreat will also include the participation of international experts in the area of intellectual property and technological capacity building which will bring global insights on these issues. Representatives from other Geneva based International Organizations working in the area of technological capacity building will also be invited to participate.
