Background
WIPO has have a very close relationship of cooperation with the Andean Tribunal of Justice (ATJ), due to the long standing and very active role of this Tribunal in the interpretation of the Intellectual Property regional legal framework that is directly applicable to Andean Countries.
On September 19, 2018, we received a request from Mr. Luis Rafael Vergara Quintero, former Chief Judge of the Andean Tribunal of Justice (TAJ) of the Andean Community of Nations (CAN), proposing to hold a seminar on intellectual property and patents to be hosted by the TAJ during the first semester of 2019.
In close coordination with the Judicial Administration for IP Division, this activity was included in the PLD WP-2019.
The Request
Mr. Hugo R. Gómez Apac, newly appointed Chief Judge of the TAJ, contacted WIPO (see attached) providing more details about the proposed seminar. This Seminar is part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the CAN and the 40th anniversary of the TAJ. The event will take place in Quito, Ecuador, from May 6 to 8, 2019, at the premised of the International University of Ecuador, which is a co-organizer.
WIPO’ contribution is foreseen for the first day of the event (May 6, 2019), which will focus on patents, as follows:

Mr. Marco Alemán, Director, Patent Law Division (back- to-back with the participation at the Master Program of the University of San Andres, Buenos Aires, Argentina).
