Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms for the Purposes of Patent Procedure

Communication by the Government of the Republic of Italy Regarding the Extension of the List of Kinds of Microorganisms Accepted for Deposit by the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Lombardia e dell'Emilia Romagna "Bruno Ubertini" (IZSLER)

The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) presents his compliments to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and has the honor to notify the receipt, on November 4, 2016, of a written communication dated November 3, 2016, from the Government of the Republic of Italy, informing him that the list of kinds of microorganisms accepted for deposit by the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Lombardia e dell'Emilia Romagna "Bruno Ubertini" (IZSLER), an international depositary authority under the Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms for the Purposes of Patent Procedure, done at Budapest on April 28, 1977, and amended on September 26, 1980 (see Budapest Notification No. 303 of February 9, 2015), has been extended to include bacteriophages and plasmids.

The text of the additional kinds of microorganisms accepted and the respective fees are as follows:

Bacteriophages and plasmids

Except: microorganisms and plasmids having properties which are or may be dangerous to human/animal health or to the environment.

IZSLER reserves the right to refuse any biological resources that represent a high hazard or that, for technical reasons, cannot be processed.

Form and Quantity:

The IZSLER BVR has the following requirements for the form of the microorganisms and plasmids that are submitted for deposit:

Bacteriophages - 12 frozen vials (1 ml each with a titre of at least 108 pfu/ml)

Plasmids (in host) - 12 lyophilized vials plus 3 agar cultures

Plasmids (purified DNA) - 12 frozen vials (25 micrograms each of isolated and purified DNA preparations)

Suitable host of the plasmid also needs to be deposited in active form (2 slants).
