Madrid System: Managing International Trademark Registrations – Record a Trademark License
While not mandatory, you may choose to record a trademark license in the International Register, with effect in multiple Madrid System members 
. We have not yet digitalized this function so, for now, you should use Madrid System Form MM13.
You can send your completed form:
- directly to us, using "Upload a Form" under eMadrid;
- through the holder's home intellectual property (IP) Office; or
- through the Office of a Madrid System member in which the license is granted.
Warning: Do not send supporting documents, such as copies of the license agreement, to WIPO!
What is the effect of recording a license in the International Register?
For some Madrid System members, recording a license in the International Register has the same effect as registering a license directly with each national/regional IP Office. It will have no effect in:
- a Madrid System member whose domestic laws do not provide for the recording of trademark licenses (Australia and New Zealand); or
- the following members, all of which have declared (under Rule 20bis(6)(b)) that the recording of a license in the International Register has no effect:
- Afghanistan
- African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI)
- Brazil
- Cambodia
- Canada
- Chile
- China
- Colombia
- Gambia
- Georgia
- India
- Indonesia
- Jamaica
- Japan
- Kyrgyzstan
- Lao People's Democratic Republic
- Malawi
- Malaysia
- Mexico
- Pakistan
- Republic of Korea
- Republic of Moldova
- Russian Federation
- Samoa
- Singapore
- Thailand
In these countries/regions, you must complete the required formalities for recording a trademark license directly with the national/regional IP Office, and in accordance with domestic laws.
