Madrid System Yearly Review 2021

WIPO has released the latest edition of the Madrid Yearly Review providing comprehensive facts and figures as well as an analysis of international trademark registrations in 2020. As reported earlier this year, the Madrid System persevered in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of international applications filed dipping by only 0.6%.
Key numbers for 2020
Despite one-year declines, applicants based in the United States of America (10,005) and Germany (7,334) continued to file the highest numbers of Madrid applications in 2020. From among the top 10 origins, China (+16.4%) is the only one to have recorded double-digit growth in 2020. However, the United Kingdom (+5.1%) and Italy (+3.6%) also reported notable growth. In contrast, Madrid applications from France (-16.3%), Switzerland (-5.4%) and Turkey (-15.4%) saw the biggest one-year declines among the top 10 origins.
Trinidad and Tobago joined the Madrid System in 2020, bringing the total number of members to 107 as of December 31, 2020, and thereby expanding the System in the Latin America and the Caribbean region. Learn more about members of the Madrid Union.

Special theme – The Madrid System: a comparison between the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and the global financial crisis of 2008-2009
This year’s review includes a special theme comparing the only two recent occurrences during which the number of Madrid applications have decreased: the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 (-0.6%) and the global financial crisis of 2008-2009 (-13.8%), including trends by top countries of origin or industry sector shares.
Did you know that for both 2009 and 2020, the share of applications indicating goods class 5 (covering pharmaceuticals and other preparations for medical purposes) remained stable at 5%? Surprising, given the focus on the pharmaceutical industry in 2020. Get more insight in our report.
