The WIPO External Office in Algeria celebrates World Intellectual Property Day, dedicated this year to the role played by women in innovation and creativity.

Highlighting the talent women contribute to the creation of wealth and economic and social development.

This year’s theme for World Intellectual Property Day, celebrated each year on April 26, is "Women and Intellectual Property: Accelerating Innovation and Creativity”.  

 

WIPO is fully dedicated to providing the support and resources women need to protect and maximize the value of their work through the intellectual property system.

The objective this year is to highlight the talent women bring to the development of inventions and creative works aimed at improving our daily lives, creating wealth and promoting economic and social development. 

Message from WIPO

“Generation after generation, the ingenuity and creativity of women – leading scientific breakthroughs, starting new trends and building enterprises – have shaped and transformed our world. 

Imagine what could be achieved by expanding their participation in innovative and creative fields of every kind. 

A more inclusive approach to innovation, creativity and business development brings in new ideas and perspectives, and thus benefits everyone. Diversity, in other words, is our strength. 

What is more, Intellectual property rights, to protect a person’s technological innovations, trademarks or creative work, are available to all individuals, wherever they may live. 

And as roughly half of our global population, women represent an enormous reservoir of talent. 

In short, greater involvement for women in the world’s intellectual property system is something to be encouraged actively, in the interests of every person, male and female alike. 

In celebrating World Intellectual Property Day 2023 we therefore pay tribute to talented women around the globe. 

They are why we work to achieve gender parity in the full enjoyment of intellectual property rights, giving free rein to the ingenuity and creativity of women and girls everywhere. Joining together we can build a better future.” 

Algerian women in the spotlight 

As one of the events for this celebration, the WIPO External Office in Algeria organized a panel discussion on the use of intellectual property tools by Algerian women having distinguished themselves as innovators, creators and business leaders. Their wide-ranging and fascinating success stories offer a source of inspiration and encouragement for women and girls throughout Algeria. 

Remarks delivered at this event by Mr. Mohamed Saleck Ethmane, Director of the WIPO External Office in Algeria, highlighted the decisive role played by Algerian women in technological innovation, entrepreneurship and scientific research. Welcoming their participation in creative value chains, he encouraged Algerian women to contribute still more. 

He also urged them to take greater advantage of intellectual property rights as a means to turn their ideas into real solutions, leading to faster development and more prosperous societies. 

In her own remarks on this occasion, Professor Djamila Halliche, Director of the Houari- Boumediene University Incubator, called the theme for this year’s World Intellectual Property Day a laudable initiative and a source of encouragement for Algerian women to start productive careers and unleash their potential as innovators and important contributors to intellectual property development.  

Hind Benghanem, President of the International Symposium on Translogistics (SITTEM) and creator of CarOpti (a digital automobile service manual) spoke about the importance for all entrepreneurs of protecting their innovations through trademarks, patents and industrial designs and models.
