Viet Nam celebrates World IP Day and World Innovation Day

Organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, with the support of the IP Office of Vietnam, this hybrid event was attended by over 100 science and technology stakeholders along with hundreds more joining via the live stream. The event was a joint celebration of World IP Day and World Innovation Day.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Huynh Thanh Dat said that science, technology and innovation are the driving forces and foundations in the socio-economic development of virtually every country. Based on this he went on to highlight that in Vietnam the strengthening and further promotion of activities to foster and encourage developments and achievements in science, technology and innovation, are very important.

The Officer-in-charge of the WIPO Singapore Office, Mr. Peter Willimott, delivered a presentation that shares details of Viet Nam’s strong performance in WIPO’s 2021 Global Innovation Index. In particular he mentioned that Viet Nam ranks 1st among the 34 lower-middle income group economies, and for the past 11 years has out-performed on innovation in relation to its development.

He also made the point that innovation and IP go hand in hand, and suggested that “IP” cannot just be about registration and enforcement, but it must broaden in perspective to include IP commercialization and even IP financing, as well as other activities related to the utilization of IP as a dynamic asset.

The event was a great way to start the World IP Day celebrations in the region for 2022!
