A Community of Practice United to Shape the Future of IP Analytics
November 12, 2024
Taking the first step is often the hardest. Even though it may feel unsteady, it can be the beginning of a rewarding journey, much like connecting the dots for a first in-person sharing and networking event aimed at ‘Elevating Patent Analytics Together’.
After the launch of the Patent Analytics Community of Practice (CoP) in November 2023 as a WIPO initiative aimed to foster a global engaged community of patent analytics experts, the First Patent Analytics CoP Annual Symposium was held at WIPO headquarters in Geneva on September 17 and 18, 2024. With over 40 patent analytics experts from 21 national IP offices, it provided a unique opportunity for CoP members to connect in person, engage in lively discussions, and expand their network. Described as “truly unforgettable” by the participants, the Symposium marked a significant milestone in embedding the Patent Analytics CoP for sharing best practices, building synergies, and shaping the future of the field.
A symposium of success
The Patent Analytics CoP aims to achieve its objectives through knowledge sharing, international cooperation, and collective learning. Hence, this Symposium was a testament to the growing importance of this field and was designed to feature a rich program with three themed sessions, a roundtable discussion, a brainstorming session, and a keynote address by Professor Frank Tietze from the University of Cambridge. His talk, “Unlocking the Value of Patent Data,” provided invaluable insights and set the tone for the event. The sessions covered topics such as “Communicating Data”, “Patent Analytics Success Stories” and “The Future of IP Analytics” sparking lively discussions and extended Q&A sessions. Participants were left with a renewed sense of purpose and direction, eager to apply these insights in their own work.
The Symposium also culminated in a facilitated brainstorming session, where participants collectively envisioned the future of the CoP. The energy in the room was palpable as they discussed potential areas of collaboration, joint projects ideas for future events, and the role of the CoP in shaping the future of patent analytics, and IP analytics more generally.
Building bridges and fostering connections
When planning the Symposium we wanted to ensure a good balance between networking and discussion on substantive topics, so it was not just about learning – it was also about connecting. Two extra optional days, planned to be a vibrant hub of networking, allowed participants, many of whom had only interacted virtually in Patent Analytics CoP online meetings before, to connect and network face-to-face, exchanging ideas and forging new collaborations through a series of thoughtfully scheduled side events. From cultural themes such as a tour of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) main building in the Palais des Nations and a guided exploration of Geneva’s Old Town, to a technical visit and workshop at CERN. These activities provided the perfect backdrop for informal discussions and camaraderie.
The stage is set for a new era of IP analytics, and the CoP is leading the way!
The success of the first Patent Analytics CoP Annual Symposium has set the stage for a bright future for this field, but it would not have been possible without the support of different teams within WIPO working as one and striving to make the best experience for all participants. The 2025 Annual Symposium will hopefully build on the momentum of the inaugural event and continue to foster collaboration and innovation in the world of IP analytics.
