Alumni Spotlight: Learn How Agustina Laboureau is Using IP to Bridge the Art World & Academia

Meet Agustina Laboureau, an Argentinean attorney and intellectual property (IP) influencer who is bridging the worlds of art and academia. Agustina is an alumna of the WIPO Joint Master’s Program in Argentina and since graduating has helped to bring the historic Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires to the metaverse thanks to the 3D trademark of the theater’s façade.

Agustina has always been passionate about theater and the arts since her days as a young ballerina in school. Her experience in the theater brought her closer to IP after first learning about it during her undergraduate studies at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina. She quickly realized that it was a subject she wanted to specialize in, and this motivated her to follow several WIPO Academy IP eLearning courses and eventually pursue graduate studies in IP at the University of San Andrés. In 2021, Agustina graduated from the Joint Master’s Degree Program in Intellectual Property and Innovation (MIPI) offered by WIPO, the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) Argentina and the University of San Andrés.

A productive pandemic

Agustina’s time during the MIPI program coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, so the courses were delivered in hybrid mode, but this did not deter her passion. She was still able to make friends and build a strong network with her fellow alumni.

The Joint Master’s Degree Program expanded my scope when it comes to IP law, as it offered an international approach to the subject. It was also one of the best times of my life because I got to make so many friends from all over the region, and together we created a network of collaboration, enabling us to work with clients all over Latin America. We are not only legal partners, as we are always first and foremost legal friends.

During her graduate studies, Agustina decided to devote her free time to launching an Instagram influencer career. She had always wanted to have an Instagram account about IP but was unsure about the topic’s appeal on this particular social media platform, however during the COVID-19 lockdowns she had time on her hands and decided to give it a try.

Agustina started experimenting and coming up with creative ways of disseminating information about IP and talking about legal cases with artists on Instagram. She quickly amassed 25,000 followers from Latin America as she posts exclusively in Spanish. She feels that followers had time to think about their IP rights during the pandemic which is why they followed her account.

Agustina doesn’t monetize her Instagram account, but she does collaborate with several organizations like the Ministry of Culture of Argentina, museums, Teatro Colón, and biotechnology companies who want to explain to their audiences how a patent works.

I try to bridge arts and academia through IP on Instagram, and I want to influence my audience to make use of IP. I want my audience to know their rights because that will also indicate their boundaries too. I try to share how to manage rights and what tools are available in favor of creators. The bottom line is that art can make also money, and artists should be aware of how to do that.

In the first year of the MIPI program, Agustina teamed up with fellow classmate and friend, Ezequiel Canle Santamaría, to establish A&E Law Bureau, a law firm specializing in entrepreneurial creativity protection. They also worked together on a book they co-authored and published in 2024 titled “The Bible of Creative Law”. Recently, Spotify reached out to Agustina and Ezquiel with a deal for a podcast based on their book, set to go live in the second half of 2025.

Influencing the future

In 2022, Agustina had the opportunity to work with Teatro Colón on an intangible assets program where she spearheaded efforts to trademark the façade of the theater as they brought the theater to the Decentraland Metaverse. She was also offered the opportunity to teach about IP to other theater agents in the country which also helped her discover her love of teaching.

Agustina is now a chair professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina, teaching subjects such as “Ethics and IP” and “Creative Entrepreneurship Management”, in addition to lecturing in universities across Latin America, including her alma mater, the University of San Andrés.

I am passionate about sharing how IP can transform lives and support creativity and innovation. Teaching about IP is another way for me spread the knowledge and influence future users of the IP system, whether they are lawyers, artists, other creatives, entrepreneurs or innovators.
