Madrid (Marks) Notification No. 34
Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks

Accession by the Democratic Republic of the Sudan

The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) presents his compliments to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and has the honor to notify him of the deposit by the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Sudan, on January 16, 1984, but with effect on February 15, 1984, of its instrument of accession to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Marks of April 14, 1891, as revised at Stockholm on July 14, 1967.

The Democratic Republic of the Sudan has not heretofore been a member of the Union for the International Registration of Marks ("Madrid Union"), founded by the Madrid Agreement.

The Madrid Agreement, as revised, will enter into force, with respect to the Democratic Republic of the Sudan, three months after the date of this notification, that is, on May 16, 1984. On that date, the Democratic Republic of the Sudan will become a member of the Madrid Union.

The Democratic Republic of the Sudan has availed itself of the right provided for in Article 3bis of the said Madrid Agreement, as revised, pursuant to which the protection resulting from the international registration extends to the Democratic Republic of the Sudan only at the express request of the proprietor of the mark. Such a request ("request for territorial extension") may, as concerns the Democratic Republic of Sudan, be made not only for an international registration bearing the date of May 16, 1984, or any date thereafter, but also for an international registration bearing a date prior to May 16, 1984. Any request for territorial extension must be presented through the intermediary of the office of the country of origin and shall be effective from the date on which it has been recorded in the International Register.
