The meeting took place in Cairo on January 31 and February 1, 2023, organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with the Japan Patent Office (JPO) and the League of Arab States (LAS), with the support of financing from the Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global. The meeting gathered the representatives of Intellectual Property Offices (IPOs) and SMEs intermediaries, focusing to exchange views and information on the updates and prospects from IPOs in the Digital Era, including the particular topic of “IP and AI: Implications for SMEs.”
In total, around 30 participants participated in the meeting from nine Arab countries (Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sudan and Tunisia), as well as from Japan and regional and sub-regional organizations (LAS, Gulf Cooperation Council Patent Office (GCCPO) and Gulf Cooperation Council Training Center (GCC-IPTC)).
At the beginning of the 2-Day meeting, Opening remarks were delivered by:
Following the opening remarks, presentations were given by participants from each country and regional and sub-regional organization to deliver updates on the IPOs’ current status, challenges and prospects in the Digital Era, including IP and Frontiers Technology and AI and IPO administration. After those presentations, the participants discussed to explore possible areas of cooperation for establishing effective IP systems using modern technologies.
On Day 2, on the main topic of “IP and AI: Implications for SMEs,” the JPO and WIPO delivered their presentations, followed by lively brain storm session and a fruitful discussion about the topic by all the participants.
