Cybersquatting Remains on the Rise with further Risk to Trademarks from New Registration Practices (PR/2007/479)

The number of cybersquatting disputes filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2006 increased by 25% as compared to 2005. In a related development, the evolution of the domain name registration system is causing growing concern for trademark owners, in particular some of the effects of the use of computer software to automatically register expired domain names and their 'parking' on pay-per-click portal sites, the option to register names free-of-charge for a five-day 'tasting' period, the proliferation of new registrars, and the establishment of new generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs).

The Dominican Republic accedes to WIPO's Patent Cooperation Treaty (UPD/2007/288)

The Dominican Republic became the 137th contracting state of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) when it deposited its instrument of accession at WIPO on February 28, 2007. The Treaty will enter into force for the Dominican Republic on May 28, 2007.

Minister of Cameroon Signs Key Trademark Law Treaty in Meeting with WIPO Director General (UPD/2007/287)

The Minister for Industry, Mines and Technological Development of Cameroon, H.E. Mr. Charles Salé, signed on February 27, 2007, the Singapore Treaty on the Law of Trademarks in the context of talks with the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Dr. Kamil Idris, on strengthening bilateral relations between WIPO and Cameroon and reinforcing the intellectual property infrastructure in the country.

Member States Make Significant Headway in Work on a WIPO Development Agenda (PR/2007/478)

The Director General of WIPO, Dr. Kamil Idris, has welcomed a major breakthrough achieved by member states in their discussions on a development agenda for the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Negotiators from 105 countries meeting from February 19-23, 2007 in the context of a forum that is looking at proposals to enhance the development dimension in WIPO's work, agreed on a first set of recommendations, which will be a part of the final list of agreed proposals to be recommended for action to the WIPO General Assembly in September 2007, after the June 2007 session of the PCDA (please see attachment). The first set of recommendations pertain to WIPO's work in the areas of technical assistance and capacity building; norm­setting, flexibilities, public policy and public domain; technology transfer, information and communication technologies (ICT) and access to knowledge; assessment, evaluation and impact studies; institutional matters including mandate and governance and certain other issues.

WIPO Hosts Colloquium on "Flexibilities in the Patent System" (MA/2007/26)

On Friday, February 16, 2007, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is hosting the third in a series of colloquia on patents that is scheduled to take place between October 2006 and September 2007 at its headquarters in Geneva. The third is entitled "Flexibilities in the Patent System."
