WIPO International Patent Drafting Training Program

A WIPO International Patent Drafting Training Program has been developed by WIPO in cooperation with the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI). The Program also provides WIPO member states with the opportunity to integrate the Program in their national/regional qualification and training of patent professionals through signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with WIPO.

Who should attend?

  • Patent agents and patent agent candidates with limited training;
  • staff of institutions dealing with technology support – such as technology transfer offices of universities and public research centers or WIPO Technology and Innovation Support Centers (TISCs); and
  • others regularly involved in supporting inventors to obtain patents who wish to further improve their skills on patent drafting.

Eligibility

To participate in this Program, applicants must have:

  1. Minimum 2 years of university level education; in law, and/ or in science and technology such as, engineering, life sciences, medicine, physics, chemistry, communication sciences or biotechnology.
    OR
    At least 1 year of professional/ work or research experience in a field relevant to patent drafting/ patent prosecution.
  2. General knowledge of IP and patents, at least equivalent to the WIPO Academy Distance Learning course DL301 - Advanced Course on Patents;
  3. Proficiency in written and spoken English;
    • Minimum 2 years of university level education or higher in English, or
    • Scored TOEFL iBT 80/120 or IELTS 6.5/9 in the last three (3) years.

Program structure

The Program consists of four Phases with two distance learning components and a one-week face-to-face workshop at the WIPO Headquarters in Geneva, followed by a final online evaluation:

  • Phase 1 - Drafting Basics: a 10-week distance learning course on the fundamentals of drafting claims and the specification and tutor-led discussions and exercises;
  • Phase 2 - Geneva Workshop: a 5-day international hands-on workshop with highly qualified instructors at WIPO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, focused on improving technology-relevant patent drafting skills and practices in different jurisdictions;
  • Phase 3 - Mentoring: a follow-up mentoring experience during 12 weeks with advanced practical exercises, designed to address the participants’ technological fields of expertise, during which the participants will receive continued support and active feedback;
  • Evaluation - These will be held online after the end of Phase 3 (Mentoring), via the WIPO eLearning Centre.

A WIPO Certificate will be awarded to those who successfully complete  Phases 1, 2 and 3 of the training program and pass the Evaluation scheduled at the end of the training program.

Registration fees

A registration fee of USD 800 is payable upon notification of acceptance. Discounts are applicable for the following categories:

  • Students (from developed countries):  USD 640 (20% discount);
  • Participants from developing countries and countries in transition (including students from those countries): USD 320 (60% discount);
  • Participants from least developed countries (including students from those countries): USD 160 (80% reduction).
