CHAPTER 2
IMPERIAL LAWS (EXTENSION)
[8th March, 1856]
1. This Act may be cited as the Imperial Laws (Extension) Act.
2.-(1) Subject to the provisions of this or any other Act, the common law of England and all Acts in abrogation or derogation or in any way declaratory of the common law passed prior to 1st January 1899, shall extend to Belize.
(2) Nothing in this section shall confer or establish any freehold of office, and all offices and appointments shall be held as heretofore and subject to all duties imposed upon the holders thereof by law.
3. Subject as aforesaid and to the provisions of the Criminal Code for the time being in force as well as to any other local legislation, the criminal law of England as it was by the common law and as amended or declared by any Act passed prior to 1st January 1899, shall extend to and have effect in Belize.
4.-(1) Wherever by this Act, or any other law, it is declared that the common law of England or any other Imperial Law shall extend to Belize, the same shall be deemed to extend thereto so far only as the jurisdiction of the court and local circumstances reasonably permit and render such extension suitable and appropriate, and all the said Imperial Laws shall be subject to any existing or future laws of the National Assembly of Belize.
(2) For the purpose of facilitating the application of the said laws, it shall be lawful for the presiding judge to construe any such Imperial Statute with such verbal alteration not affecting the substance as may be necessary to render the same applicable to the matter before the court.

- (3)
- Every judge or officer of the Supreme Court having or exercising functions of the like kind, or functions analogous to those of any judge or officer referred to in such Statute, shall be deemed to be within the meaning of the enactments thereof relating to such last mentioned judge or officer.
- (4)
- Whenever the Great Seal or any other seal is mentioned in any Statute, it shall be read as if the seal of the Supreme Court were substituted therefor.
5. In the construction of all Acts extended to Belize under this Act and for the purpose of their local operation and so far as may be necessary for their enforcement
- (a)
- they shall be read as if they had been made and passed in Belize;
- (b)
- all offences and causes of action cognisable in any county in England may be tried in the courts of Belize; and
- (c)
- all references therein to absence in places beyond the seas shall be construed as references to absence in places beyond the limits of Belize.

shall extend to Belize by virtue of this Act, but any such Act may be specifically applied to Belize by another law.
