In Japanese fiscal year (JFY) 2023, the WIPO Japan Office (WJO) organized short-term fellowship programs in the area of IP for international students studying and enrolled in Japanese universities, with support from Funds-In-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan IP Global).
The programs invited fellows to undergo group and customized training programs in the area of IP at IP law firms in Japan for the duration of five days.
Taking into account the focused study areas and interests of the fellows, WIPO and the host institutions customized the training programs. Training programs included items such as lectures in IP and IP strategy, practices such as patent searching, practical case studies, and visit to relevant institutions (e.g., the Japan Patent Office and courts) while the fellows were requested to make presentations on the IP framework or success stories in the fellow’s home countries.
The WJO accepted total of six fellows whose nationalities are Bangladesh, Brazil, Cambodia, Libya, Morocco, or Uzbekistan in JFY 2023, and these fellows participated in the programs at Seiwa Patent & Law or Soei Patent & Law Firm in the group of three at each firm. All of them expressed high level of satisfaction with the programs and many of them highlighted the benefits of networking opportunities provided under the programs.
