WIPO Patent Drafting Training Program

Improving the skills of those filing patent applications is important for the well functioning of the patent system at the national, regional and international levels. Nonetheless, inventors, patent professionals and other users of the patent system may not necessarily have all the fundamental knowledge and expertise they need to draft and file a patent application. Yet filing a carefully crafted patent application is the first effective step towards obtaining appropriate protection for inventions and thus for making an effective use of the patent system.

To help users improve their patent drafting skills and techniques, WIPO offers two different types of training programs: Patent Drafting Workshops in Member States (at national and regional levels) and the WIPO International Patent Drafting Training Program. These trainings are held regularly as part of WIPO’s human capacity building activities.

Patent Drafting Workshops in Member States

These workshops are short duration, tailor-made trainings organized in collaboration with member states, national and regional intellectual property (IP) offices and institutions. The workshops take place in the co-organizing country or region. They are primarily targeted to staff of Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) in universities and public research centers, WIPO Technology and Innovation Support Centers (TISCs) or other patent professionals supporting inventors.

WIPO International Patent Drafting Training Program

WIPO – in collaboration with the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI) – offers a comprehensive training program that leads to a Certificate upon passing a final examination. The Program is open to all eligible individuals interested in improving their drafting skills, such as patent agents and patent agent candidates with limited training. Member states may also integrate the Program in their patent professional qualification or training system.
