Notes
The Federal Law on Copyright of 1948 ('the Law') was the first copyright law enacted in Mexico. It was promulgated on December 31, 1947, published in the Official Federal Gazette (D.O.F) on January 14, 1948, and entered into force on January 29, 1948, fifteenth days after its publication in the Official Federal Gazette referred to in its Article First of the Part 'Transitional Provisions'.
The Law is divided into six chapters: Chapter I (Articles 1-36) on Copyright, Chapter II (Articles 37-65) on Edition and Other Means of Reproduction, Chapter III (Articles 66-94) on Societies of Authors, Chapter IV (Articles 95-112) on the Department of Registry of Copyright, Chapter V (Articles 113-121) on Penalties, and Chapter VI (Articles 122-134) on Tribunals and Procedures.
Article Two under 'Transitional Provisions' of the Law provides for the repeal of Title Eight of Book II of the Civil Code (relating to legal framework on copyright), and any other legal provisions contrary to the Law.
The Law was repealed by the Federal Law on Copyright of 1996, which was published in the Official Federal Gazette (D.O.F.) on December 24, 1996, and came in force on March 25, 1997.
